MARINE TERMINALS

Three marine terminals operated by the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) and located in Norfolk, Newport News, and Portsmouth serve the region as one of the busiest general cargo ports on the East Coast with a 50-foot-deep, year-round, ice-free harbor.  Over 95% of the world’s shipping lines call on the Port of Hampton Roads, linking Virginia to more than 380 ports in over 115 locations worldwide. In July 2017 the General Assembly approved a $350 million state-backed bond deal to expand cargo capacity at Norfolk International Terminals, the Port’s largest terminal. The project will increase capacity at the terminal’s south berth by 46%.

RAIL SERVICE

The Hampton Roads region enjoys exceptional cargo handling and transportation through the extensive rail service provided by Norfolk Southern and CSX. The combined rail system consists of 43,300 miles of tracks linking 23 states, including the entire Eastern U.S. and the Province of Ontario, Canada. Amtrak provides daily passenger rail service between Norfolk, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston.

NORFOLK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (ORF)

ORF has kept up with the brisk pace of the air cargo industry by housing one of the most efficient air cargo facilities in the state of Virginia. Approximately 60 million pounds of air cargo are presently shipped in and out of the airport. All cargo airlines serving ORF include FedEx, Mountain Air, and United Parcel Service. They are supported by a large network of forwarders and customs brokers specializing in air freight. The General Aviation facility is operated by Signature Flight Support and is home to more than 100 aircraft.

HIGHWAY SYSTEM

Hampton Roads is linked to domestic markets by one of the country’s most modern interstate and state highway systems. Interstate 64, a major east-west route, encircles the metropolitan area. Due west are the principal north-south interstate highways, I-85 and I-95. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel gives coastal highway traffic direct access to Hampton Roads and saves 90 miles to the New York/New Jersey corridor.

HAMPTON ROADS TRANSPORTATION PLANNING ORGANIZATION
