NORFOLK, VA — Norfolk Department of Development – Norfolk Works assists with the creation and development of a partnership to assist Norfolk Businesses that are having difficulty in staffing key industries by pulling together stakeholders to develop the Norfolk Summer Youth Initiative Collaborative, called NextGen.

The local partnership involves members of various groups to create a partnership in which the Hampton Roads Workforce Council (HRWC)’s NextGen Pathways will provide a central intake and youth support, while Norfolk Public Schools-Career and Technical Education will connect directly to youth in Norfolk. The City of Norfolk Economic Development Department’s Norfolk Works workforce initiative & Visit Norfolk will develop relationships with the business community and support the identification of employment and internship sites.

The goal of the partnership is to ensure Norfolk youth and young adults have employment and internship opportunities this summer while trying to fill the employment gap that is occurring, particularly in our local hospitality and restaurant industry.

NextGen Pathways Opportunity Fair. The NextGen Pathways Opportunity Fair provides teens and young adults with an opportunity to gain access to employment, volunteer, and post-secondary education opportunities in the region.

Norfolk Works was launched in December 2016 and is designed to align economic and workforce development efforts, champion the recruitment of diverse Norfolk talent to support business attraction, retention and expansion, and collaborate with our workforce partners to help Norfolk citizens prepare for and connect to in-demand employment opportunities.
