Recap of last Week's Development Events

The last week of January was a busy one for the Economic Development Department in Norfolk. Developers across the City and Hampton Roads region are preparing for a busy and successful year in 2024. Here in Norfolk, members of the Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) team are doing their part by kicking on the first month with 3 events that help businesses and job seekers connect and grow.

VTOP Internship Training – Tuesday, January 30th

A pilot program at Norfolk State University brought together members of Norfolk’s business community to focus on training to hire college and military interns. Co-chairs Saranette Williams, NSU’s Director of Career Services, and Michael Paris, Senior Business Development Manager, conducted a 6-hour training to equip businesses with the tools needed to implement pain internships into their business plans, including matching funds.

‘How to Qualify’ Enterprise Zones Workshop – Wednesday, January 31st

A workshop about state and local Enterprise Zone benefits, hosted by our BRE manager Samantha Hudler and Virginia’s DHCD Kate Pickett Irving, assisted Norfolk businesses and CPA’s on how to qualify and apply to for these incentives. Over the span of 2 hours, over 25 attendees learned detailed information and were able to ask specific questions to the experts.

Norfolk-Portsmouth Hiring Job Fair – Thursday, February 1st

This job fair was held in Downtown Norfolk’s TCC Student Center on Granby Street. In partnership with the Hampton Roads Workforce Council, Portsmouth Economic Development, Tidewater Community College, and community partners, the very first Norfolk-Portsmouth Hiring Expo was successfully held. Over 50 employers from across the city and region connected with over 200 job seekers eager to begin a new career path.

Join us for the Portsmouth Job Fair on Friday, 2/15 at TCC’s Portsmouth Student Center from 10am – 2pm to meet more employers throughout the region. Don’t forget to bring your resume!
