Tidewater Community College (TCC) will soon roll out its latest classroom, literally! The WeldNOW mobile welding lab is a partnership training program between TCC, Norfolk Works, and Lyon Shipyard, the inaugural host site.
The program partners are actively recruiting for their first-class, with a focus on recruiting Norfolk residents. Participation is also open to Hampton Roads residents through TCC. Classes are scheduled to be about 5 weeks. The state-of-the-art mobile lab has eight welding booths to offer hands-on experience to each student.
Participants will earn an industry-recognized credential in welding recognized by the American Society of Welding that can be used to gain entry-level shipyard and advanced manufacturing jobs that involve welding.
Lyon Shipyard will guarantee an employment interview for a full-time position with benefits for anyone who completes the training. Lyon Shipyard recently announced an expansion that will create 119 new jobs. Participants may also interview with additional local employers interested in hiring WeldNOW graduates.
The mobile classroom classes, anticipated to start this winter, will be free for qualifying participants. Please call Norfolk Works for more information: (757) 763-6064
