This is an ongoing series that profiles Norfolk small businesses and entrepreneurs who have benefitted from the programs offered by the Norfolk Department of Development and their partners.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Here’s a Norfolk business that is dedicated to helping those battling this disease.

Determination + Compassion + An Eye For Beauty – this is the formula that best describes the woman behind the vision and the business, Becky Styles. Styles has over 30 years of professional experience as an educator, master stylist, entrepreneur, and owner of Tangles Fancy Wigs & Hair Boutique.

She is shaking up the beauty industry with an innovative beauty concept. Tangles is a private suite that operates by appointment, allowing them to provide a level of compassionate service that is unique to Tangles.  The majority of their clients are undergoing medical treatments that lead to hair loss, mostly cancer treatments.  Styles understands how important it is to the recovery of their client. They provide each salon guest with  a private place to select a wig, and then have it properly customized and styled by an onsite Master Wigsatician. “We understand how stressful it can be to have lost hair due to a medical condition or treatment” said Styles.

Tangles combines medical necessary hair replacements and professional cosmetology services. They also have salon and wig products available for purchase. So, it’s a one-stop-shop, providing a tailored and dedicated experience for each client’s needs.

Over the past few years, Styles has taken advantage of several programs offered by the Department of Development to help her grow and expand her business.  In 2019, she he was a one of the winners of a pitch competition, the recipient of a grant from the Capital Access Program (CAP), is currently enrolled in the Technical Assistance Program, a partnership program with The Rockefeller Foundation, and is working with Norfolk Works to expand her workforce.

Styles is very active in the community, often lending assistance to countless community service and non profit organization’s projects, as well as serving on several boards and associations.
