Fairwinds Landing leases Norfolk Southern’s Lambert’s Point Docks Property to serve wind and defense industries

Project to involve over $100 million in capital investment, facility to host over 500 new jobs

NORFOLK, Va., May 5, 2022 Fairwinds Landing, LLC. announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway Company for a 30-year lease of the company’s Lambert’s Point Docks, a facility situated adjacent to Norfolk Southern’s coal terminal. Fairwinds’ vision is to transform the property into a world-class maritime operations and logistics center that supports the offshore wind, defense, and transportation industries. The facility will be rebranded as “Fairwinds Landing” to mark its transformation. Beginning in late 2022, Fairwinds expects to invest more than $100 million in buildings and infrastructure.

“Fairwinds Landing will be a critical link in the supply chain supporting our country’s renewable energy goals. We envision this facility will host companies who will bring over 500 new jobs to the area supporting the offshore wind energy industry. This is a generational opportunity to not only help meet our energy needs, but to evolve and grow the economy of the Hampton Roads region,” said Jerry Miller, CEO of Fairwinds Landing.

Currently, there is a shortage of port facilities that have the capability and availability to support the Biden Administration’s goal of installing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. The Commonwealth of Virginia passed legislation in 2020 that relies on generating 5,200 megawatts from offshore wind facilities annually by 2034 to assist in transitioning the state to 100% clean energy usage by 2050. Fairwinds Landing will have the capabilities to support many aspects of the offshore wind supply chain, including manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly; construction and marshalling; staging, maintenance, and operations; as well as maritime logistics and transportation.

“This innovative redevelopment of Lambert’s Point Docks will make Hampton Roads a significant hub for the offshore wind industry. It will attract new businesses and serve existing ones in the region. We are pleased the facility will support current tenants, rail operations, and the needs of industrial shippers, bringing together some of the most sustainable industries in our economy in one location,” said Kathleen Smith, Vice President Business Development and Real Estate at Norfolk Southern.

“Fairwinds Landing at Lambert’s Point Docks is positioned to become the premiere East Coast location for offshore wind operations and maintenance; manufacturing; and maritime support operations and logistics,” said Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander. “This development promises significant numbers of good-paying, renewable energy jobs for Norfolk residents, further solidifying our position as a true ‘City of the Future.’”

Covering 111 acres, Fairwinds Landing is one of the top East Coast facilities able to support the offshore wind industry. The property features 6,000 linear feet of waterfront infrastructure and pier space that boasts more than 30 feet of water depth, as well as deep water access, no air draft restrictions, and proximity to two large offshore wind developments in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
